Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Answers to the questions we hear most often — about practice, programmes, contributions, and visiting the ashram.
Practice & meditation
Do I need prior experience to attend a programme?
No. The introductory programmes are designed for complete beginners. The only requirement is a sincere intention to learn. Advanced programmes have prerequisites clearly listed in their descriptions.
What tradition or lineage is Thasmai based in?
Thasmai is rooted in the Advaita Vedanta tradition as transmitted through the Southern Indian lineage. The practices include mantra meditation, pranayama, self-inquiry, and study of classical texts (Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita). It is not affiliated with any single monastic order.
Can people from other religions or backgrounds participate?
Yes. The practices and teachings are universal in orientation. Participants from all backgrounds are welcome. There is no requirement to adopt any particular religious identity.
Are the programmes in English or Telugu?
Most programmes at the ashram are conducted in Telugu and English. Online sessions are typically in English. Please mention your language preference when registering.
Programmes & enrolment
How do I register for a programme?
Visit the Meditation Classes page, choose a cohort, and complete the registration form. An introductory fee secures your place. You will receive a confirmation email with a PDF welcome pack and calendar invite.
What is the difference between the Base Programme and a Theme Programme?
The Base Programme is the foundation — a structured introduction to the full practice system. Theme Programmes go deeper into specific areas (e.g., stress, relationships, concentration) and are available to graduates of the Base Programme.
Can I transfer to a different cohort after registering?
Yes, subject to availability. Write to us before the cohort starts. Transfers after the first session are at the discretion of the programme coordinator.
What is the refund policy?
Full refund within 7 days of enrolment. 50% refund between 7 and 14 days. No refund thereafter. In exceptional circumstances the trust may exercise discretion. See the Policies page for full details.
Donations & finances
Is my donation eligible for tax deduction?
Yes. Thasmai Trust is registered under Section 12A and approved under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act, 1961. An 80G receipt will be issued within 7 days of a confirmed donation.
Can international donors contribute?
Yes. Thasmai Trust is FCRA registered, enabling it to accept foreign contributions legally. International donors should write to the office for wire transfer details and an FCRA receipt.
Can I direct my donation to a specific programme?
Yes. Use the Support an Initiative page to designate your donation. For directed contributions above ₹50,000 a specific utilisation certificate can be issued on request.
How are funds used? Is there an annual report?
All programme funds are ring-fenced by initiative. Annual audited accounts are published. Administration costs are covered by a separate operating fund and are not charged against programme donations.
Visiting the ashram
Can anyone visit the ashram?
Day visits are welcome on most weekends. Residential stays are for programme participants and retreat guests. Write to us to confirm availability before planning your trip.
Where is the ashram located?
Gurugramam is in Nalgonda district, Telangana, approximately 90 minutes from Hyderabad by road. Detailed directions are shared on confirmation of a visit.
Is accommodation available?
