The method explained

What is SMS Meditation?

Sun, Moon & Star (SMS) Meditation is a structured inner practice rooted in the Advaita Vedanta tradition. Not a relaxation technique. Not breath awareness alone. A systematic path from distraction to steadiness, from surface awareness to depth.

Origins

Rooted in the oldest living science of mind

The Upanishads describe consciousness as the ground of all experience. SMS Meditation is a contemporary rendering of these teachings — a step-by-step method any sincere person can follow.

Sun, Moon & Star represent the three dimensions of awareness — outer clarity, inner rhythm, and the still point at the centre. The method is new in its format; the territory it points to is ancient.

Three pillars

How the practice is structured

Mantra

A specific sound-form given in initiation. Not incantation, not affirmation — a direct means of withdrawing attention from the stream of thought.

Vichāra

Structured self-inquiry. The mind is turned toward the question of its own source. This is the Advaita element of the practice.

Karma yoga

Action in the world conducted without attachment to result. Seva is not separate from meditation — it is meditation made external.

What changes

What practitioners report

  • Reduced reactivity to stressors — not indifference, but the ability to respond rather than react.
  • Sustained attention without effort. The quality that makes study, work, and relationships more alive.
  • A shift in the center of gravity from thought-loops to a quieter, more spacious background.
  • Greater access to equanimity during difficulty, without suppressing or denying what is felt.
Sarvaṃ hy etad brahma — all this is indeed Brahman. This self is Brahman. The practice is the path back to that knowing.
— Mandukya Upanishad 1.2
