The journey mapped

Stages of practice

The path is not linear, and no two practitioners are identical. But there is a recognisable shape to how the practice deepens — useful to know before you begin.

Five stages

How the practice unfolds

A map of the path from first sitting to sustained inner clarity. No two journeys are identical — but the territory is recognisable.

01

Orientation

Weeks 1–2

The practice is introduced. The mechanics of mantra meditation are given, a sitting routine is established. Most people experience their first taste of genuine stillness — and also discover how restless the mind is. Both are useful.

02

Settling

Weeks 3–8

The routine deepens. Reactivity begins to reduce noticeably. Sleep often improves. Attention span increases in daily life. The practice starts to feel less effortful. This is the stage where most people decide to continue.

03

Stabilisation

Months 3–6

A second quality of stillness is accessible — not just during practice but in the background of activity. Vichāra (self-inquiry) is introduced. The practitioner begins to investigate the nature of the one who is meditating.

04

Integration

Year 1–2

Practice and life stop being separate. The equanimity cultivated in sitting begins to colour how difficulties are met. Karma yoga (action without attachment) becomes the primary practice in the world.

05

Deepening

Ongoing

Theme Programmes become available. Sustained inner clarity. The path now unfolds through service, study, and proximity to the lineage rather than effort alone. This stage has no ceiling.

A note on pace

The path unfolds in its own time

These stages are a map, not a schedule. Some practitioners move through Orientation in a week; for others it takes three months.

There is no prize for moving faster, and no penalty for moving slowly. The practice meets you exactly where you are. The only failure is stopping.

Depth the path can reach

Shanaḥ śanaḥ uparamet — gradually, step by step, let one come to stillness through the intellect held firm. Having fixed the mind in the Self, let one think of nothing.
